The Directors of Out of Eden recognise their responsibility to manage the environmental
impact of their activities, products and services. In order to promote good environmental
practices throughout the Company, the policy with regard to the environment is as follows:-

1. To identify any effect of its activities on the environment.
2. To comply with relevant environmental legislation and regulation.
3. To minimise the inputs of utilities and resources and the outputs of emissions to the
atmosphere, and wastes to disposal facilities; endeavouring to re-use, recover or
recycle materials where possible.
4. To ensure that environmental responsibilities are understood at all levels within the
Company and provide appropriate training where needed.
5. Where possible to ensure that suppliers understand the Company policy and assist
them in developing responsible behaviour with regard to the environment.

"Use By" dates explained

Most prepacked foodstuffs must carry a date of minimum durability. This can be either a 'best before' date or a 'use by' date.

These date marks must be in a prominent place on the label, if this is difficult the manufacturer must state where the date can be found, e.g. best before: see date on lid.

It is an offence for unauthorised persons to change date marks. Manufacturers are the only ones authorised to do so.

'BEST BEFORE' DATE

This may take the form of the words 'best before' followed by the date, e.g. 'best before' 1 January 2003. The date marks on longer-life food may use the phrase 'best before end' followed by a date,

e.g. 'best before' end March 2003. This is the date up to and including which the food can be expected to remain at peak quality if properly stored. Food may be edible after this date; however its quality may suffer, e.g. potato crisps might become soft.

It is not an offence under the Food Labelling Regulations to sell food passed it's 'best before' date; however an offence may have been committed under Section 14 of the Food Safety Act 1990 as the food may

not be of the 'quality demanded by the purchaser'. The retailer is responsible for ensuring that food sold has not deteriorated beyond the point acceptable to the consumer.

It is a criminal offence to sell food not of the 'quality demanded'.

'USE BY' DATE

This consists of the words 'use by' followed by the date, e.g. 'use by' 5 April 2003. The 'use by' date is used for food which are highly perishable and which can after a short period cause an immediate health risk; examples are meat pies and some ready prepared meals. These foods could become a health risk if used after the 'use by' date. It clearly instructs consumers as to the date a product should be used by. Some foods, such as bread, are highly perishable but do not carry the immediate risk and are therefore labelled with a 'best before date'.

It is a criminal offence to sell, or have on your premises exposed for sale, under the Food Labelling Regulations, any product that has gone beyond its 'use by' date. Any product passed its 'use by' date must be removed from sale.

EGGS

There are some specific rules that only apply to eggs. Eggs must be marked with a 'best before' date. This date may be up to a maximum of 28 days after the eggs are laid. Eggs must be sold to the consumer within 21 days after the eggs were laid, this means that they must be sold 7 days before the 'best before' date expires,

e.g. Eggs marked 'best before 22 March' must be sold by 15 March.

It is an offence to supply eggs if there are less than 7 days before the 'best before' date expires.

STORAGE CONDITIONS
Both 'use by' dates and 'best before' dates may be accompanied by storage conditions. The storage conditions given on the label must be followed by the retailer to avoid the deterioration of the food whilst it is in their possession.

Towel Care

Do not mix towels with polycotton or cotton fabrics during washing or tumble drying. Make sure your towels do not come into contact with cleaning products containing bleach. Facial cleansers and skin treatments contain benzoyl peroxide which can also damage towels.

WASHING

Separate white/light/dark colours. Use detergent without optical brighteners for best results.

Avoid using fabric softeners in every wash because they reduce the absorbency of the towels.

Do not overfill the washing machine: we recommend you fill it to 60% capacity.

Most stains will be removed at a maximum temperature of 60c. Use a long spin cycle and remove the towels from the washing machine as soon as possible to minimise creasing.

DRYING

Do not overfill the tumble drier.

Remove towels from dryer when 95 to 97 percent dry.

Avoid extremely hot drying temperatures.

Bed Linen Care

Do not mix poly cotton or percale bed linen with cotton fabrics (especially towels) during washing or tumble drying – it could pick up loose fibres and cause pilling.

WASHING

Separate white/light/dark colours.

Use a colour safe detergent that does not contain optical brighteners.

Do not overfill the washing machine.

Wash at a temperature of no more than 40°C.

Remove the bed linen from the washing machine as soon as possible.

DRYING

Do not overfill the tumble drier.

Dry on a cool setting – no more than 70°C to 80°C

Do not over-dry and use a cool down period allowing the cloths, and walls of the machine to cool completely before stopping the tumble drier. (This will minimise creasing.)

IRONING

Use a cool to warm iron.

Do not bleach or dry clean.

“Driving the forklift truck. Knowing we’ve had a good day getting goods in and sending them out to customers. Being with my manager - she’s reet good crack.”
“I’ve joined the Gym through work and I’m trying to keep fit. I enjoy going out every weekend and socialising with my friends and boyfriend. I play darts on Wednesday and football in the summer. Never a quiet moment!”

When you own a business you don’t expect to see your name signed into the visitor’s book – but that was the sight that greeted co-owner of Out of Eden.

Ian Hartley arrived at his Kirkby Stephen business which supplied the hospitality industry to find his own name signed in.

Ian said: “I arrived to see Ian Hartley signed into our visitors book which I thought was odd because it wasn’t in my hand writing and I don’t normally sign in.

“It turned out that we were doing some forklift training and Ian Hartley from Carrylift Materials Handling Ltd, Manchester was here as our instructor. Imagine my shock when I realized my namesake was in the building.

“But the staff were even more shocked as he introduced himself around the building. Ian Hartley, 56 from Burnley was surprised when I introduced myself and he admitted this was the first time in his life that such a thing had happened.”

Walkers hike up their holidays

Vicky is Warehouse coordinator for us at Out of Eden.
When we get a delivery Vicky arranges it’s unloading from the vehicle, ensuring that there is plenty of staff available to handle the large deliveries and still have plenty of cover in other areas of the warehouse. Vicky then coordinates the checking and location of goods coming in and updates stock levels in the computerised stock and order management system.
Vicky said that the best part of her job is the variety and opportunities it gives her throughout Out of Eden. Vicky enjoys socialising and spending time with her family as well as shopping – as every girl does!

Meet our Team - Linda

Linda joined us way back in February 2004 and is now our Dispatch Coordinator. Making sure that goods are sent out to customers as fast as possible after the order is taken is Linda’s main role and the part of her job that she enjoys the most. On really busy days (usually before a Bank Holiday) everyone needs their delivery to get to them as soon as possible if not before. Celebrations are in order when we have yet another record day in dispatch.Linda enjoys a quiet read when she gets a break but is kept busy walking her two dogs in her spare time and keeps fit by keeping up with five grandchildren!

Representatives from Out of Eden have recently travelled to Devon, Cornwall, Wales and The Lake District to attend and exhibit at various trade shows for the hotel and catering industry.
Attendance at these exhibitions is for several reasons, to promote the company, the products and to show new products available. This year this included new bed linen and duvet covers, a new range of toiletries, including soap made at their base in Kirkby Stephen and also a greater range of Fairtrade products which now includes a twin pack of biscuits made especially for Out of Eden. It also allows customers, old and new, to see, feel, smell and handle the products, plus giving the Out of Eden representatives a chance to meet customers face to face.

We've aquired the soap production machinery from our UK manufacturer, who was a victim of the recession, and so all Eden, Luxury and Spa Works soaps are now being made here in Cumbria. We have plans to develop and manufacture other soaps in the coming months.

Introducing Julie, who joined our team in April 2005.
Newlywed Julie is a Senior Despatch Assistant whose role is to process your orders using our Order Management system. She generates the picking notes which go to the warehouse, deliver notes and invoices. Julie also packs and despatches your parcels.
When asked what she liked most about her job she enthusiastically replied “Everything, I love my job”
Julie has added her other favorite occupation as “socialising”.

I have just washed Ian's Wash and Bounce pillow which he has been using for almost as long as we have supplied them - thirteen years!

Again, washing has not only restored the loft but has improved the feel of the pillow. It is, consistently, one of our best selling products.

Not bad for a pillow that looks as though it is filled with shredded carrier bags (it's actually blown loose polyethylene!) See our website for the specification.

I joined the Out of Eden team in 2004 when we had a small handful of Customer Services operators and everyone had to take a turn at answering the phones. I still spend a couple of days a week in Customer Services but because I am artistic I jumped at an opportunity to become the website administrator a couple of years ago.
The best part of my job is taking the images for the website and designing the new home pages. The website is very successful and I get most satisfaction from knowing that my contribution has made a difference.
In my spare time I am an artist and I have three horses, both hobbies which I share with my two daughters.

Setting off from Kirkby Stephen we filled the local Plus Bus to capacity. Staff vehicles were drafted in to help carry the remaining walkers to the pretty village of Crosby Garrett.
Leaving the village we headed west towards Smardale Mill, over a wooden bridge crossing Scandal Beck and on up the hill. Here we joined a disused railway track following the beck through the woods and out into the beautiful scenery of Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve.

The photo shows us as we stopped for a rest above the Smardale Bridge, where the famous Coast to Coast long distance path crossed our route.
Arriving at The Black Swan in Ravenstonedale in plenty of time for a refreshing drink before a most enjoyable meal.
